Star Dreams — Out of Reach, and Still Useful

Unlike the sun and moon, stars are defined by being too far to reach. That distance is not a flaw in the symbol. It is the symbol.

Unreachable, and therefore reliable

Stars could not be gotten to, and that is exactly why they were useful: they stayed put. Sailors and travellers found their position by them for as long as there has been travel.

So a star in a dream stands for a goal or a standard — something you will not arrive at, but which keeps you oriented while you move.

That is a more useful reading than “wish.” A star is not a wish; it is a bearing.

Situation by situation

A sky full of stars. Possibility, in quantity. Sometimes too much of it — the reading shifts toward not being able to choose.

One conspicuously bright star. A clear objective. If it did not move — a pole star — the reading is a fixed principle rather than a goal.

A shooting star. A brief opening. The whole character of the thing is that it is gone before you finish reacting. Seeing it at all means you noticed.

Stars going out. A goal losing definition.

Reaching toward one. Moving in a direction you know you will not complete. Read favorably — orientation without expectation of arrival is a stable way to live.

A star falling toward you. Something distant becoming suddenly close. Whether that reads well depends on whether you were ready.

Clouded over, no stars. Bearings lost. Common during periods with no clear standard to work against.
