Hair Dreams — Cutting It, Losing It, Going Grey

Hair is part of the body that you are allowed to change. Cut it and it does not hurt; it grows back. That single property decides how dreams use it.

Teeth stand for what cannot be undone. Hair is the reverse — cut, grown out, dyed, tied up. So hair in a dream points at the version of yourself you present, specifically the parts that are adjustable. Image, bearing, the mode you are currently operating in.

Confucian tradition held that the body and hair are received from one’s parents and should not be damaged — so cutting hair was a serious act, not a style choice. Buddhist ordination begins with shaving the head precisely because it marks a break with ordinary life. In Japan the word for hair (kami) is a homophone for god, and folklore treated hair as a place where spirit could reside.

English tradition has Samson and little else. The gap is large, and it explains why a haircut dream reads as a mood in one place and as a rupture in another.
