Butterfly Dreams — The Only Symbol That Means Change By Definition
A butterfly is a creature that was something else. What landing, chasing and a dying butterfly each signal, plus our letter-rule numbers.
Most dream symbols acquire their meaning from culture. The butterfly does not need to. It is an animal that was visibly something else, and every tradition that noticed arrived at the same conclusion.
Transformation, without needing to be taught
A caterpillar and a butterfly are the same organism and share almost nothing. That fact does the interpretive work by itself: butterflies stand for change that is complete rather than gradual.
That is what separates them from other change symbols. Snakes shed and remain snakes. Butterflies do not remain caterpillars.
So a butterfly dream tends to arrive not during change but after it — when something has finished becoming what it was going to become.
Situation by situation
A butterfly landing on you. The most reported version, and read favorably almost everywhere. Something completed choosing to stay near you.
Chasing one and not catching it. Something beautiful that will not be held. The reading is usually that holding it was never the point.
A butterfly emerging. Watching a transition finish. Often reported by people observing someone else’s change — a child, a partner.
Many butterflies. Abundance without weight. One of the few unambiguously light images in dream interpretation.
A dying or damaged butterfly. Something that transformed and did not survive the transformation. Worth attending to, since it usually has a referent.
A butterfly indoors. Something free in a space that constrains it.
Zhuangzi’s butterfly
Worth knowing, because it is the most famous dream in East Asian thought.
The Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly, and on waking could not determine whether he was a man who had dreamed of being a butterfly or a butterfly now dreaming of being a man. The passage is roughly 2,300 years old and it is still the standard reference point for questions about the boundary between dreaming and waking.
If your butterfly dream left you unsure which side you were on, you are in old company.
The numbers
