Insect Dreams — Small Things That Do Not Go Away
One bug is nothing. The problem is that there is always another. What crawling, swarming and insects leaving the body each signal.
The defining property of insects is not that they are unpleasant. It is that removing one does not solve anything — there is always another.
Small, and persistent
Interpretation uses that directly. Insects stand for things that are individually minor and collectively wearing — small worries, unfinished admin, the low-grade static of a life with too many open items.
The reporting supports it. These dreams cluster during backlog periods rather than crisis periods. Crises produce different dreams.
Situation by situation
Insects crawling. Several things bothering you at once. The degree of revulsion tracks the weight of the load.
Killing or clearing them. Read favorably — cleanup has begun. Getting all of them means a matter closing.
Insects coming out of your body. Alarming to wake from and read well. Something internal moving outward — worry or ill health resolving.
Insects going into the body. The reverse. Taking something on.
A swarm. Everything arriving at once.
Flying insects for problems you cannot get hold of; crawling ones for problems in plain sight that you have not touched.
Butterflies and ladybirds are read separately and favorably. They are technically insects and are not doing the same symbolic work.
The Japanese layer
Japanese has an entire category of expressions where mushi — the word for insect — refers to something inside a person that acts independently of their will.
Mushi no shirase, an insect’s notification, means a premonition. Mushi ga sukanai, the insect does not like it, means an instinctive dislike. Hara no mushi ga osamaranai, the stomach insect will not settle, means anger you cannot put down.
The old belief was that insects lived in the body and moved the emotions. English has no equivalent, which means a Japanese insect dream carries a layer about pre-rational reaction that an English reading does not reach for.
