Korea. Crying is built into ritual. Traditional funerals include gok — formal wailing — and letting grief out audibly was part of mourning rather than a lapse in composure. The concept of han, a long-held unresolved grief, is discussed openly as a cultural trait. Characters in Korean film and television cry a great deal, and that is not stylistic excess — it rests on this ground.

Japan. The opposite pressure. Not crying in front of others has long been treated as a virtue, and children are told so directly. That is why rui-katsu — organised events where people gather specifically to cry — became a recognised thing. In Japan the dream may be the only place crying was available.

Taiwan. Professional mourners at funerals are a real occupation — hired to weep so the family’s grief is properly voiced. Crying is something that can be performed on your behalf.

Ritual, restraint, or a job someone does for you. In English tears are mostly evidence of sincerity — which is why crocodile tears needs a name.
